abstract = "The proper water resources management follows the detailed
comprehension of the physical process involved in the water cycle.
Recently a large number of remote sensing techniques for
observation of hydrological variables has been developed. That
enables large and sparse areas monitoring (for example, the Amazon
basin), with a superior temporal-spatial cover to the in situ
observations. Altimetry is the study of altitude measurements, or
the altitude representation in maps or topographical plans. The
American satellite ICESat (ICE, Cloud and Elevation Satellite),
developed by NASA, was used in this research to perform water
level measurements in Brazilian rivers and lakes. The goal of this
paper is to evaluate the ICESat utility in hydrologic
applications. To reach it, a software was developed to process the
ICESat altimetry data, through a routine in Matlab programming
language. The resulting code and interface proved to be effective
tools to process ICESat data. To validate the satellite data, a
comparison was made between water levels obtained by remote
sensing and the Ag{\^e}ncia Nacional de {\'A}guas (ANA) gauged
stations in the Bananal Island region. It was noticed that the
ICESat water level variation approached the ANA gauged stations
data, with mean squared error smaller than 30 cm. Another
potencial aplications: average slope of the waterline; flood
plains monitoring; calibration of hydrodynamic models; leveling
                         staff gauge.",
